Driveway and Apron Repair Project in Chicagoland
Residential patching and repair that made a cracked driveway look new again
The Challenge
This Chicagoland homeowner had a driveway that was falling apart. Years of harsh Chicago winters had taken their toll. The surface had deep cracks running through it, and chunks of asphalt were breaking off at the edges. The garage apron was in even worse shape with large broken sections.
Water was getting into the cracks and freezing during the winter months. Every freeze and thaw cycle made the damage worse. If the driveway and apron were not fixed soon, the homeowner would need a full replacement instead of just a repair.
The homeowner wanted a cost-effective fix that would stop the damage and make the driveway safe and smooth again.

Our Solution
We used a targeted patching approach to fix the damaged areas without tearing out the entire driveway. Here is what our crew did step by step.
Saw-Cut Removal. We used a concrete saw to cut clean, straight lines around each damaged section. This gives us sharp edges for the new asphalt to bond to instead of ragged broken edges that would crack again.
Base Repair. After removing the old broken asphalt, we checked the gravel base underneath. In spots where the base had washed out or settled, we added fresh aggregate and compacted it tight. A solid base is what keeps the new patch from sinking or cracking later.
Hot Mix Asphalt Patch. We filled each cut-out section with fresh hot mix asphalt. We made sure to slightly overfill each area because the asphalt compresses during the next step. The new material was spread evenly and raked smooth to match the height of the existing driveway.
Compaction. Our crew used a vibratory plate compactor on each patched area. This packs the asphalt down tight so it bonds with the existing surface and holds up to car traffic. The finished patches sit level with the rest of the driveway for a smooth ride.

The finished driveway and apron look great. The patches blend in well with the existing surface, and the homeowner can pull in and out without hitting any bumps or cracks.
Before and After Comparison
See the transformation side by side. From a cracked, damaged driveway to a smooth, repaired surface that will hold up for years to come.

They fixed my driveway and apron in one day. The crew was professional and cleaned up after themselves. The patches look smooth and even, and I do not have to worry about tripping on broken asphalt anymore. Great work at a fair price.
